The driving ability part of your driving test
Do not worry if you make a mistake - it might be a minor driving fault of which you are allowed 15 minor driving faults. The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test the examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. Before your driving test begins you will be asked to read a number plate from the required distance, and you will be asked two questions about the maintenance of a car, known as show me tell me questions.
Your general driving ability During your driving test the examiner will give you directions which you should follow. Do not worry if you go the wrong way, as long as your mirrors, signals and road position are correct this would not be a driving fault. You will need to be able drive on various road, dual carriageways and varying traffic conditions. You might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop this is not classed as a manoeuvre. You should always try drive in the way your green badge driving schools instructor has taught you, during your driving lessons.
Your ability to reverse your vehicle safely During your driving test you will be asked to complete one reversing manoeuvre. The examiner will choose one manoeuvre from: Reversing around a corner Turning in the road Reverse parking - either into a parking bay, or parallel parking at the side of the road, the Sutton and Cheam driving test centres do not have the facilities to Bay Park.
Independent driving section of the driving test Your driving test will also include around ten minutes of independent driving this is designed to assess your driving ability and decision making.
You're driving test results You'll pass your driving test if you make: 15 or less driving faults No serious or dangerous faults When the driving test has ended, your Green Badge driving schools instructor will be waiting, and if you wish, will listen to the examiners assessment of your drive.
The different types of driving faults that can be marked A dangerous driving fault - involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property (a dangerous fault means that you have failed your driving test and your test could be abandoned) A serious driving fault - could potentially be dangerous (a serious fault would mean that you have failed your driving Test) A minor driving fault - not potentially dangerous, but if you make the same fault throughout your test it could become a serious fault. (If you have less than 15 minor faults and no dangerous or serious faults, congratulation you have passed) Once you have passed your driving test, you may wish to gain further experience with a pass plus course.
Main reasons why pupils fail driving tests Pupils should only take a driving test when their Green Badge driving schools instructor believes that they are capable of passing a driving test. Failing a driving test is very expensive and the waiting times for another driving test could be as much as 16 weeks at the moment, even as much as 32 weeks if the booked test is cancelled due to weather or examiner illness. At Green Badge Driving Schools our instructors will advise you about 8 weeks ahead of your driving test whether they think you will be ready in time. If your driving instructor feels that you will not be ready, they will either suggest more lessons or suggest that you move your driving test to a later date and look for cancellations if necessary. All Green Badge Driving Instructors are fully aware of the driving standard required to pass a driving test and our advice may save you a lot of money and time.
Most pupils who fail driving test fail due to nerves. At Green Badge driving schools we will conduct mock tests on official Sutton driving test routes to gauge your ability and mentality towards a driving test.
Lack of driving experience Lack of driving experience is a major factor at the moment. At Green Badge driving schools we understand that learning to drive can be expensive, however failing driving tests is more expensive. Regardless of what you think, you can not fluke a driving test, the driving test examiners are trained to spot inherent driving faults and test you in those areas to asses if the fault was a one off mistake or whether you need more training.
Lack of local area knowledge: The Sutton and Cheam driving test routes will not only test your ability to use your mirrors, control a car and apply signals. You will need to be able to see, read and understand road signs, i.e. speed limit changes, one way street and no entry roads. The test routes may also involve the rose hill, Cheam hall or Furness road roundabouts and Lane discipline on dual carriageways. All Green badge driving schools instructors are familiar with the local area and test routes.
